Alexandra Exter

With Caroline Wallis, Geometrician A collection of 16 essays on the artist's painting and works for the theate between 1910 and 1924. The essays explore the colour theories that gave rise to her abstract painting and the basic laws of structure that gave order to her Cubist, Simultaneist, Non-Objective painting and her stage and costume design. Contemporary accounts of her three plays, Famira Kifared, Salome, and Romeo and Juliet are included together with extracts from Alexander Tairov's, Notes of a Director (1921). The book closes with a detailed and illustrated Chronology of Exter's exhibitions and paintings. 288 pages. Over 400 colour illustrations.

Reviewed by Elizabeth Cowling in Modern Language Review April 2004: 'Apollinaire's only book on art, Méditations esthétiques, is a title that captures well its intuitive and prophetic tone.... Peter Read's is a sensitive and readable translation in which the recurrence of words and metaphors signifying creativity (light and fire, in particular) is pointedly reproduced. In his commentary Read discusses Apollinaire's main ideas and sources lucidly and succinctly, drawing special attention to his deification of the 'pure' creative artist who has abandoned the age-old goal of naturalism.... The nice sense of Apollinaire's book as an object in its own right extends to the design and layout of the text, which imitate that of the first edition. In this thoughtful, and loving, version, the rediscovery of The Cubist Painters is a pleasure.' Other reviews in Que Vlo-Ve? Avril-Mai 2003 (Williard Bohn), Times Literary Supplement May 2 2003 (Robert Short), The Art Book June 2003 (Simon Dell), et.al.

Reviewed by Anthony Parton in The Art Book (Blackwells and the Art Historians Association of Great Britain), Vol. 9, No. 2, March 2002: ‘This book, like Gabo’s sculptures themselves, is a beautiful object.... As the publisher makes clear, the layout and design of the book are based upon the typographical principles that Gabo himself employed in the design of the Constructivist magazine Circle, of which he was co-editor in the 1930s. If the form of the book is top quality then so too is its content. As the title indicates, Gabo on Gabo is an anthology... which directly address[es] the development of his art and his aesthetic ideology. The texts... have been carefully selected by the editors to reflect and clarify the key aspects of Gabo’s thought and practice during the various phases of his career in Europe, Britain and America. An ‘introduction’ provides a succinct overview of Gabo’s career and this sets the writings in their context.’

Reviewed by Peter Stupples in New Zealand Slavonic Journal, October 1993: ‘This is a valuable production for the historian of modern Russian art: a facsimile production of the anti-catalogue for the exhibition 5 x 5 = 25 held in Moscow in 1921.... Milner’s essay goes over the familiar ground... but in doing so emphasised very nicely the outlines of the theoretical position of the groups.... Milner’s essay and this facsimile catalogue are very valuable additions to our growing knowledge of a period of debate about art and of original art practice which still astonishes by its audacity.’ Also reviewed in Umbrella, (San Francisco), Oct 1992.

Reviewed by Daniel H. Hodge (University of Kentucky) in Art Documentation, Summer 1992: ‘Lissitzky’s work in About 2 Squares reveals groundbreaking graphic design that became widely influential in European art publications of the 1920s and 1930s. The impact of Lissitzky’s work can be seen in much of the graphic design of the period and in many artists’ books of today. Railing’s essay, contained in the accompanying volume, provides a thorough account of the underpinnings of Lissitzky’s vision.... Careful to include in her discussion the vital aspect of word sounds to the full intent of Lissitzky’s About 2 Squares, Railing disseminates the paintings with convincing parallels between the contents of the pages and suprematist texts.... Through the success of her discussion, Railing honors Lissitzky’s intentions for bringing his work to life in the first place: “...it is not enough to stare at it with one’s own eyes; one’s whole head must be turned in a different direction.”’ Other reviews: Margaret B. Betz (Ohio State University), Slavic and East European Journal, No. 2, 1993; David Geary, The Structurist (University of Saskatchewan), No. 31/32, 1991/92; Peter Stupples, New Zealand Slavonic Journal, Oct 1992; Slavonic and East European Review (University of London), Oct 1991; et. al.

Reviewed by John G. Hatch (University of Western Ontario) in Languages of design, 1995: ‘Railing’s handbook [accompanying the beautiful reprint of Malevich’s Suprematism . 34 Drawings] is one of the better short monographs on Suprematism.... One of the particular strengths of this book is its examination of the paintings in the context of the theoretical writings.’ Other reviews: Peter Stupples, New Zealand Slavonic Journal, 1991, David Geary, The Structurist, University of Saskatchewan, No. 31/32, 1991/92, et.al.

Reviewed by Christina Lodder (University of St Andrews), The Slavic and East European Review, Vol. 69, No. 1, Jan 1991: ‘This is a bold book, which takes a stimulating overview of the interrelationships of art history, artistic theory, literary theory, art, and poetry. It also adds an important new dimension to our understanding of cultural developments and those subtle interactions between Russia and the West which provide so much of the fascination of the 1910s.... This small book is eminently worth reading.’ Other reviews: John Milner, Times Literary Supplement, 31 Aug - 6 Sept 1990, Helen James, British Journal of Aesthetics 31-1 Jan 1991, Peter Stupples, New Zealand Slavonic Journal 1991, David Geary, The Structurist, University of Saskatchewan, No 31/32, 1991/92, Ray Lauzzana, Languages of design, Vol 1, No 3, Aug 1993.
