With Caroline Wallis, Geometrician
A collection of 16 essays on the artist's painting and works for the theate between 1910 and 1924. The essays explore the colour theories that gave rise to her abstract painting and the basic laws of structure that gave order to her Cubist, Simultaneist, Non-Objective painting and her stage and costume design. Contemporary accounts of her three plays, Famira Kifared, Salome, and Romeo and Juliet are included together with extracts from Alexander Tairov's, Notes of a Director (1921). The book closes with a detailed and illustrated Chronology of Exter's exhibitions and paintings.
288 pages. Over 400 colour illustrations.

Reviewed by Elizabeth Cowling in Modern
Language Review April 2004: 'Apollinaire's only book on art, Méditations
esthétiques, is a title that captures well its intuitive and
prophetic tone.... Peter Read's is a sensitive and readable translation in
which the recurrence of words and metaphors signifying creativity (light
and fire, in particular) is pointedly reproduced. In his commentary Read
discusses Apollinaire's main ideas and sources lucidly and succinctly,
drawing special attention to his deification of the 'pure' creative artist
who has abandoned the age-old goal of naturalism.... The nice sense of
Apollinaire's book as an object in its own right extends to the design and
layout of the text, which imitate that of the first edition. In this
thoughtful, and loving, version, the rediscovery of The Cubist Painters
is a pleasure.' Other reviews in Que Vlo-Ve? Avril-Mai 2003 (Williard
Bohn), Times Literary Supplement May 2 2003 (Robert Short), The

Reviewed by Anthony Parton in The
Art Book (Blackwells and the Art Historians Association of Great
Britain), Vol. 9, No. 2, March 2002: ‘This book, like Gabo’s
sculptures themselves, is a beautiful object.... As the publisher makes
clear, the layout and design of the book are based upon the typographical
principles that Gabo himself employed in the design of the Constructivist
magazine Circle, of which he was co-editor in the 1930s. If the
form of the book is top quality then so too is its content. As the title
indicates, Gabo on Gabo is an anthology... which directly
address[es] the development of his art and his aesthetic ideology. The
texts... have been carefully selected by the editors to reflect and
clarify the key aspects of Gabo’s thought and practice during the
various phases of his career in Europe, Britain and America. An ‘introduction’
provides a succinct overview of Gabo’s career and this sets the writings
in their context.’ |

1993: ‘This is a valuable production for the historian of modern Russian
art: a facsimile production of the anti-catalogue for the exhibition 5 x 5

ground... but in doing so emphasised very nicely the outlines of the
theoretical position of the groups.... Milner’s essay and this facsimile
catalogue are very valuable additions to our growing knowledge of a period
of debate about art and of original art practice which still astonishes by
its audacity.’ Also reviewed in Umbrella, (San Francisco), Oct

Squares reveals groundbreaking graphic design that became widely

impact of Lissitzky’s work can be seen in much of the graphic design of
the period and in many artists’ books of today. Railing’s essay,

Through the success of her discussion, Railing honors Lissitzky’s
